Thanks Patrick. Yes, very enjoyable. The photo shows a cell phone version of what was really an amazing sight in person, a deep red sun hitting the horizon.
For anyone in the Sacramento area interested in some weekend camping: Dillon Beach at Lawson's Landing was only a few hours away and reasonably priced at about $28 per vehicle. See: Reservations and prices. They also were selling bundles of firewood for $6 each when I was there. There are small bathrooms (no mirrors) which were not very good. No showers that I could find. Bring your own TP and a warm sweater for the evening because it does get cold.
