'Oldest' marathon runner Buster Martin dies

Buster MartinA London man who claimed to be the world's oldest marathon runner has died.

Buster Martin said he was 101 when he ran the London Marathon in 2008.

He was still working as a van cleaner at Pimlico Plumbers. His boss Charlie Mullins said: "Buster sadly passed away last night at the age of 104."

Mr Martin was not awarded the Guinness World Record as the oldest person to complete a marathon after being unable to verify his age.

He features in a film by American documentary-maker Mark Wexler being released in the US in May, called How to Live Forever.

'Buster's beers'

In a blog entry on London firm Pimlico Plumbers' website, managing director Charlie Mullins wrote: "I can't believe it, only yesterday afternoon was he in the canteen knocking back one of Buster's beers, and now today he is gone.

"Buster certainly enjoyed life and was living life to the full right up until the end."

Several months after his marathon run, Mr Martin claimed to have been issued a passport with a date of birth verifying his age, after there were suggestions that he was "only" 94.

Guinness World Records were still not able to verify the record because of the absence of a birth certificate.

Pimlico Plumbers said that Mr Martin completed the 2008 marathon in just under ten hours, and he raised £20,000 for charity.

A biography on the website for the film that features Mr Martin, described him as "Britain's oldest working man" and said he enjoyed "a beer or two and 20 cigarettes daily".

85 year old man crosses Atlantic on raft to raise water awareness

Anthony Smith, David Hildred, Andrew Bainbrigde, John RussellA grandfather from London and his three-man crew have successfully crossed the Atlantic on a raft made of pipes after 66 days at sea.

Anthony Smith, 85, wanted to complete the 2,800-mile (4,596km) voyage to highlight the fact a billion people worldwide live without clean water.

The former BBC Tomorrow's World presenter hopes to have raised £50,000 for the charity WaterAid.

They set sail from the Canary Islands and reached the Caribbean on Wednesday.

Mr Smith recruited the team of "mature and intrepid gentlemen" - aged between 56 and 61 - by placing an advert in the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

It read: "Fancy rafting across the Atlantic? Famous traveller requires 3 crew.

"Must be OAP. Serious adventurers only."

The 85-year-old was a science correspondent and presenter on the BBC programme, which was axed in 2003 after 40 years.

Speaking ahead of the trip Mr Smith said: "Water strikes at the very heart of need.

"To voyage almost 3,000 miles upon the salty kind will make us intensely aware of places in the world that are without adequate supplies."

Their vessel, named the An-Tiki, was constructed out of 12m (39ft) lengths of pipe.

It was powered by a 400-square-foot sail and steered using twin rudders and oars, travelling at an average speed of four knots. ...

Fat Man Running: Former Sumo Champ Does Marathon

Kelly GneitingHow can you lose 3.8 pounds in just in 9 hours, 48 minutes and 42 seconds?

Run the L.A. Marathon!

Former sumo wrestler Kelly Gneiting left the starting line weighing exactly 400 pounds... and when he arrived at the finish, he was down to a svelte 396.2 pounds, according to the Daily Mail.

He became the fattest man to finish a marathon -- and even beat his own personal best, set when he was just 275 pounds, by two hours.

"I'd like to see the Kenyan improve his marathon time by two hours," he joked after the race.

And for you men planning to get married, there's a lesson/warning in this for you: Gneiting says he was just 200 pounds when wed.

"Suddenly, jeez, I didn't need to attract anyone," he said. "I just kind of let myself go."

Fortunately, he found his place in the world of amateur sumo -- and even won U.S. titles in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

And now, he's got a record of his own... if not exactly one most people aspire to.

'Spiderman' Alain Robert scales Burj Khalifa in Dubai

Alain Robert climbs the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, 28 March Robert appeared not to use his harness

Alain Robert, the French urban climber dubbed spiderman for his feats, has scaled the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

It took him six hours to ascend the 828-m (2,717-ft) tower in the United Arab Emirates city, including the tapered spire above the top floors.

A large crowd watched from the ground as he moved up the facade, picked out by spotlights after darkness fell.

Unusually, he used a rope and harness, to comply with safety requirements.

"I know that sometimes there may be some specific requirements," he told Reuters news agency before the climb.

"I do understand. You know, this is such an iconic building so I can understand that even though they are taking care so much about my precious life, they are also taking care a lot of that precious Burj Khalifa."...

Strapped to a safety harness tethered more than 100 floors up, he began his climb up the silvery, glass-covered tower just after 1800 (1400 GMT) on Monday.

Moving methodically and swiftly along the metal facade, he ascended a central column, largely avoiding rows of pipes that could have slowed his climb.

On reaching the top, he waved triumphantly.

Robert, 48, has scaled more than 70 skyscrapers, including New York's Empire State Building and Chicago's Willis Tower in the US, and the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, according to his website.

In 2004, he climbed Taiwan's Taipei 101, the world's tallest building at the time.

Philadelphia Breast Surgeon Moonlights as Knife Thrower

Dr. Ted Eisenberg has a target in his backyard where he practices throwing knives and tomahawks.Meet Dr. Ted Eisenberg, holder of the world record for the most breast surgeries performed in a lifetime.

Rest assured, ladies -- you're probably in safe hands.

Not content with handling scalpels all day, in his spare time Eisenberg is a competitive knife thrower.

Inspired by fictional Australian outback hero Crocodile Dundee and James Bond movies, the Philadelphia surgeon is a delicate artist by day who relaxes after hours with tomahawks and hunting knives."It's a little unusual, it is a little different, but it's not that different from bowling or golf, which you can watch on TV all day, every day," Eisenberg told AOL News.

"I have always thought it was kind of cool watching James Bond movies, Crocodile Dundee -- anybody who was able to wield a knife and throw it across the room and make it stick.  ...

London 2012 countdown clock stops in Trafalgar Square

The digital clock in central London which has been counting down to the 2012 Olympics has stopped, less than 24 hours after it started.

The timer was unveiled in a ceremony in Trafalgar Square on Monday to mark the 500th day before next year's Games.

But the 6.5m (21ft) display became stuck on 500 days and 7:06:56.

"We are obviously very disappointed that the clock has suffered this technical issue," said a spokesman for the Swiss-based Swatch Group.

"The Omega London 2012 countdown clock was developed by our experts and fully tested ahead of the launch in Trafalgar Square," he added.

"We are currently looking into why this happened."

The clock had resumed its countdown by Tuesday evening.

via BBC News - London 2012 countdown clock stops in Trafalgar Square.

Probably just got caught in a time bubble created by the LHC. The Swiss are very advanced, but they probably shouldn't have used so many Higgs singlets to make this clock.  ;-)

Artist Michael Kalish Creates Portrait of Muhammad Ali Using Punching Bags

KalishAli1This artist's tribute to Muhammad Ali floats like a butterfly and swings like a ... punching bag.

Using about 1,300 speed bags, five miles of stainless steel cables and two miles of aluminum tubing, artist Michael Kalish has strung up a massive homage to boxing's biggest legend.

The installation -- titled "reALIze" -- uses punching bags to form a 23-foot-tall portrait of the famed fighter's face.

From nearly every angle, the giant work looks like a mess of poles, wires and hanging speed bags.

But from one perspective, it all comes together to form Ali's face.

NJ congressman tops 'Jeopardy' computer Watson

Turns out all it took to top Watson, the "Jeopardy"-winning computer, was a real-life rocket scientist.

Rep. Rush Holt of New Jersey is just such a scientist. The congressman topped the IBM computer Monday night in a "Jeopardy"-style exhibition match held in a Washington hotel.

Holt says it was fun to beat the heralded computer. But he also says it's important that Americans realize how important math and science education is to the nation's future.

The Democrat from the Princeton area built a lead in categories including "Presidential Rhyme Time," in which the correct response to "Herbert's military strategy" was "Hoover's maneuvers." The congressman also correctly identified hippophobia as the fear of horses.

Watson beat him to the buzzer with the answer "love" when prompted on what Ambrose Bierce described as "a temporary insanity curable by marriage." ...

Holt played the first round along with Rep. Bill Cassidy, a Louisiana Republican. At the end of the round, Holt had earned $8,600 to Watson's $6,200.

But the computer ultimately triumphed in later rounds against other representatives, amassing a combined $40,300 to the humans' $30,000.

Holt received a round of applause Tuesday at a hearing of the House Natural Resources Committee for besting the computer.

He thanked crowd and gave a shout-out to "neuron based thinking, instead of semi-conductor thinking."

Holt said it was fun to beat the heralded computer. But he also said it's important that Americans realize how crucial math and science education is to the nation's future.

"I was proud to hold my own with Watson," Holt said. "More importantly, I was proud to join IBM and other members of Congress to highlight the importance of science and math education and research and development.

"While it was fun to outdo Watson for one night in trivia, it is vital that, as a nation, we out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world for generations to come," he said.

via NJ congressman tops 'Jeopardy' computer Watson - Yahoo! News.

...  For the last three years, I.B.M. scientists have been developing what they expect will be the world’s most advanced “question answering” machine, able to understand a question posed in everyday human elocution — “natural language,” as computer scientists call it — and respond with a precise, factual answer. In other words, it must do more than what search engines like Google and Bing do, which is merely point to a document where you might find the answer. It has to pluck out the correct answer itself. Technologists have long regarded this sort of artificial intelligence as a holy grail, because it would allow machines to converse more naturally with people, letting us ask questions instead of typing keywords. Software firms and university scientists have produced question-answering systems for years, but these have mostly been limited to simply phrased questions. Nobody ever tackled “Jeopardy!” because experts assumed that even for the latest artificial intelligence, the game was simply too hard: the clues are too puzzling and allusive, and the breadth of trivia is too wide.

With Watson, I.B.M. claims it has cracked the problem ...

Technically speaking, Watson wasn’t in the room. It was one floor up and consisted of a roomful of servers working at speeds thousands of times faster than most ordinary desktops. Over its three-year life, Watson stored the content of tens of millions of documents, which it now accessed to answer questions about almost anything. (Watson is not connected to the Internet; like all “Jeopardy!” competitors, it knows only what is already in its “brain.”) During the sparring matches, Watson received the questions as electronic texts at the same moment they were made visible to the human players; to answer a question, Watson spoke in a machine-synthesized voice through a small black speaker on the game-show set. When it answered the Burj clue — “What is Dubai?” (“Jeopardy!” answers must be phrased as questions) — it sounded like a perkier cousin of the computer in the movie “WarGames” that nearly destroyed the world by trying to start a nuclear war.

This time, though, the computer was doing the right thing. Watson won $1,000 (in pretend money, anyway), pulled ahead and eventually defeated Gilmartin and Kolani soundly, winning $18,400 to their $12,000 each.

“Watson,” Crain shouted, “is our new champion!”

It was just the beginning. Over the rest of the day, Watson went on a tear, winning four of six games. It displayed remarkable facility with cultural trivia (“This action flick starring Roy Scheider in a high-tech police helicopter was also briefly a TV series” — “What is ‘Blue Thunder’?”), science (“The greyhound originated more than 5,000 years ago in this African country, where it was used to hunt gazelles” — “What is Egypt?”) and sophisticated wordplay (“Classic candy bar that’s a female Supreme Court justice” — “What is Baby Ruth Ginsburg?”).

By the end of the day, the seven human contestants were impressed, and even slightly unnerved, by Watson. Several made references to Skynet, the computer system in the “Terminator” movies that achieves consciousness and decides humanity should be destroyed. ...

Not Photoshopped

I'm not afraid of heights, but this picture found on oddee is freaking INSANE!  I squirm when I look at it.

Then I found the VIDEO below and I'd just like to say, "Dean, seriously, quit while you are ahead!"

The base jumping is crazy enough but in this photo he has no safety net, no line, no chute, nothing.

Frozen waterfall climber rescued after fall in Beacons

Image of frozen waterfall climbers: Desicolours

An ice climber has suffered serious back injuries after a 60ft fall from a frozen waterfall in the Brecon Beacons.

A helicopter from RAF Chivenor, Devon, took him to hospital where it was found he had fractured three vertebrae.

Afterwards, Brecon Mountain Rescue Team's deputy leader said plans to downgrade the Chivenor operation should be reconsidered.

The Department for Transport said no decision has been taken on Chivenor's future.

The unnamed climber, from Cardiff, lost his footing when the ice beneath his feet gave way.

About 30 members of four mountain rescue teams, including the Brecon team, were involved in the two-hour rescue operation which began at about 1600 GMT on Satuday.

The climber was tackling the frozen waterfall with a friend at Torpantau, south of Talybont on Usk.

He tumbled about 20ft and then fell a further 40ft onto a rock, mountain rescuers said.

Two other ice climbers who were nearby, including a former member of the Brecon Mountain Rescue team, went to his aid and stabilised him until rescuers could arrive. ...

Brit invents underwater scooter

HyrdoBOB /Andrew Sneath/Solent News/RexA British inventor has created a new underwater scooter that allows tourists to explore coral reefs without learning to scuba dive - or even swim.

Holidaymakers can sit on the HydroBOB and dive to depths of 100ft at tourist sites around the world.

Andrew Sneath, HydroBOB designer and company founder, said: "With minimal training the rider can cruise the underwater world without the need to wear cumbersome dive equipment."

Mr Sneath, a former car factory worker from Bromsgrove, near Birmingham, now based in Florida, added: "Riding HydroBOB is a unique memorable experience of a life time."

The HydroBOB's helmet-like dome contains an air bubble that is continually filled with oxygen from an onboard tank.

The clear acrylic dome gives a 180 degree view and the oxygen tank is big enough to give over an hour's use before resurfacing.

Users don't need goggles, breathing apparatus or a wet suit. They can wear glasses and even talk underwater.

A 12 volt battery stored under the seat allows the scooter to move at two knots. Depth is controlled by a bounce bag, similar to that worn by a scuba diver to control buoyancy.

Users are given a simple ten minute briefing on underwater signalling and how to equalise the pressure in their ears.

Hydrodome has made 350 HydroBOBs - or breathing observation bubbles - for rental at tourist destinations worldwide, including the Bahamas, Australia and Tenerife. ...

Hexed: Radio morning show hires witch to curse LeBron James

Rover, host of the syndicated Rover's Morning Glory program hired a witch to place a curse on Miami Heat star LeBron James the morning of the Heat's season opener, Tuesday, October 26. Rover says the curse is payback for the insensitive, pompous way James abandoned the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The witch, Samhain and assistant witch Lady Magick used bones, blood, and James' Miami Heat jersey to place a hex on the star live on the air. Rover asked all Cleveland-area listeners of the show, which is based at 100.7 WMMS-FM, to simultaneously focus all their negative energy towards James during the ceremony.

"A broken leg, hand or other debilitating injury would be the best outcome," says Rover. "At the very least a sordid sexual misconduct accusation against LeBron would be alright I suppose."

LeBron James was widely criticized for the way in which he declared his departure from the Cavaliers, announcing it on a live television broadcast on ESPN titled The Decision.

"The city of Cleveland has been cursed for decades with losing sports franchises," notes Rover. "Now we're going on the offensive to curse others. It may not help our teams win, but it will sure make us feel better."

The last time a major league Cleveland sports team won a championship was in 1964 when the Cleveland Browns won the NFL Championship. In 2004 ESPN named Cleveland the most tortured sports city in America.

via Hexed: Radio morning show hires witch to curse LeBron James - 19 Action News|Cleveland, OH|Breaking News, Weather, Exclusives.

Now that he knows, he can just get a counter-hex.  One simple protection spell by any competent witch would do the trick.  These things only work if you don't publicize them.

Kung fu sisters stage combat tournament to find men to date

Defeat me and then marry meMarital arts experts Xiao Lin, 22, and little sister Yin, 21, are to stage a three day fighting festival in Foushan, south east China, where only the toughest suitors stand a chance of getting through.

First contestants must show off their archery skills, then they must carry a heavy weight over sharpened bamboo spears, and finally they have to defeat one of the sisters in full contact combat.

Only then will contestants earn the right to remove the girls' masks and propose to them.

'They can chose open hand or any weapon they wish but we won't be holding back. If they can't beat us they aren't worthy," explained Lin.

'We tried dating agencies but the men we met were all to weak. We could beat them easily,' said Yin.

'So we went back to ancient ways called Bi Wu Zhao Qin - which was the way warrior princesses would find their men.'

But so far, only a trickle of brave contestants has come forward.

'I'm a very good martial artist - but I think I'd want to see them with the masks off before I decided whether I wanted to fight for them,' said one doubtful suitor.

Forget Tsunamis: Asteroids Will Really Kill Us With UV Rays

Forget Tsunamis: Asteroids Will Really Kill Us With UV RaysIf a medium-sized asteroid lands in the ocean, tsunamis won't be the only worry. Water vapor and sea salt thrown up by the impact could damage the ozone layer, leading to record levels of ultraviolet radiation that could threaten humanity.

"This suggests new issues you could have with ocean impacts that people hadn't thought of before," says Brian Toon of the University of Colorado at Boulder, who was not involved in the work. ...

Some simulated impacts created depletions that were still felt across the whole Earth a year later. "It will produce an ozone hole that will engulf the entire Earth," Pierazzo says.

The longest lasting and most severe depletion – a cut of more than 70 per cent in ozone levels – occurred over much of the northern hemisphere.

... While people may be able to protect themselves from the increased threat of sunburn, the intense UV light could also affect our food supply by damaging plants and the phytoplankton that represent the bottom of the ocean's food chain. "That is enough to really cause problems for our civilization," Pierazzo says. ...

British racing pigeon ends up 5200 miles away in Panama 'after getting lost'

British racing pigeon ends up 5200 miles away in Panama 'after getting lost'Andrew Hough - A British racing pigeon called Houdini got lost on her first race and ended up thousands of miles away in Panama City.

The 10 month-old bird had been undertaking a six hour race from Guernsey to Dudley, West Midlands more than five weeks ago.

But it failed to arrive and its owner Darren Cubberly, 45, had give up hope the bird would return from the 224 mile trip.

He was surprised to get a phone call this week from Panama City, where the bird had ended up.

He was told the bird was alive and healthy despite making the more than 5200 mile trip. It is thought she landed on a ship travelling to the area.

The bird had been taken in by Gustavo Ortiz after it landed on his roof. Mr Ortiz rang Mr Cubberly after noticing contact numbers on it.

"I was gobsmacked. I didn't even know where Panama was," Mr Cubberley told the Daily Mirror.

"I've no idea how Houdini got there - I can only assume she hitched a lift on a ship across the Atlantic.”

He speculated she was fed on the boat as she appeared in “perfect shape”.
