A Secret to Long Life: UFOs?

Ralph Gardner - ... I met Alexander Imich at a party where he was the oldest person in the room. That may not sound like a big deal—more and more frequently these days I attend events where I am the oldest person. But the party where I met Dr. Imich was for people over the age of 100, and there were a couple dozen of them.

Dr. Imich, a chemist born in 1903, and I had a brief conversation at the Queens event. I vowed to see him again, and not because he was ancient, or at least not just because he was ancient. My grandmother lived to almost 105, but she was just a shadow of herself after 100. Dr. Imich, on the other hand, remains a dynamo. But it was his interests that most intrigued me. At the party, he regaled me with tales of paranormal events he claimed he'd witnessed—at his West End Avenue apartment, no less.

I don't believe in parapsychology or UFOs, another of the centenarian's interests, but I was impressed with his passion on the subject and his claim to have published dozens of scholarly papers in several languages. So I asked Arthur Solomon, the gentleman who had invited me to the party back in October, whether he could reconnect me with Dr. Imich (the honorific from a Ph.D. he earned in zoology in 1929).

Mr. Solomon checked and reported that unfortunately Dr. Imich had entered the hospital with some unspecified ailment. A couple of months later, Mr. Solomon contacted me. "I bet you never expected to hear from me again," his email began. "But here I am with news about Dr. Imich. I was told he is feeling better and would like to do the interview."

So on Monday afternoon I visited him at his apartment at the Esplanade, a senior-citizens residence on West End Avenue. He has lived there 50 years, actually since before it became a senior residence and was a hotel, according to Robin Kaufman, his social worker.

If there were any doubts about Dr. Imich's mental acuity, he dispelled them within seconds of our arrival at his cluttered one-bedroom apartment with excellent views of the Hudson River. He complimented Natalie Keyssar, our photographer ("You're beautiful," he said); commented that he wasn't aware that The Wall Street Journal ran photographs; and then patiently spelled out the name of the Polish city where he was born, Czestochowa, launching into its history. ...

Occasionally Dr. Imich would lapse into silence—only for a few seconds—and I'd wonder whether it was a sign of senility, or at least flagging stamina. But that wasn't it, because his next recollection, or retrieval of a name or date from the distant past, was just as confident, his voice just as robust, as anything that he'd said previously  ....

But on to the paranormal, though Dr. Imich doesn't claim to possess such powers himself. He produced bottles filled with objects such as bottle caps and plastic utensils that couldn't have fit through their holes. He also told the story of the time he heard an explosion in his apartment and discovered a visitor, whose arrival he'd been awaiting at his front door, seated on the floor behind him. He also believes in UFOs and has a photograph on his desk of friends he says were abducted by aliens. Finally, he believes that humans can survive largely without food, and attributes his longevity, at least in part, to how little he eats.

Whether he's right about any or all these things scarcely matters. "I've never seen Alex tired," said Ms. Kaufman, who works for Selfhelp, a support organization for Holocaust survivors. "All that stuff he was talking about keeps him going."

Awesome. But it would be nice to hear what Dr. Imich actually said about UFOs.  I don't understand how someone can get to the point where he is writing for the WSJ, and yet is able to get away with saying he does not believe that some flying objects are unidentified.

"I don't believe in parapsychology or UFOs".

Why, then, write an article titled "A Secret to Long Life: UFOs"?

Saying you "don't believe in UFOs" is a bone headed statement.  So, do you believe in ... "objects"? Do you believe some objects fly, float, reflect, or otherwise appear to be in the sky? Okay, last question: Do you believe some objects that appear to be in the sky are unidentified?  If you answered YES to all three, then you DO believe in UFOs, so stop lying. If you do not believe some flying objects are unidentified, then kindly explain exactly what was picked up by forward looking infrared radar by the Mexican military, for starters.

And, Ralph, parapsychology is a field of study. It really exists! Do you understand what I'm saying? The field of study, parapsychology, exists. I think you intended to say that you believe people are mistaken who believe in ghosts, life after death, telekinesis, telepathy, regression memories, out of body experiences, and anything else parapsychologists research.  I guess your way of saying it is shorter.

University Prof Bill Wickersham Calls for Congressional UFO Hearing

Congress has a full plate of hearings coming up. Everything from medical liability reform, creating and promoting jobs and investigating Internet child pornography to assessing China's behavior and making immigration work for American minorities.

Do you think the House or Senate will have any extra time to discuss UFOs? While it sometimes might seem as though our lawmakers are from outer space, this hasn't stopped one college professor from urging Congress to take a serious look at unidentified flying objects.

Citing findings from a 12-year-old groundbreaking French UFO study, University of Missouri-Columbia psychologist and adjunct professor of peace studies Bill Wickersham has issued a call for congressional leaders to boldly go where their predecessors wouldn't.In 1999, a special 13-member committee in France, made up of retired generals, scientists and space experts, created the COMETA Report, a study of 500 worldwide UFO sightings. The investigation narrowed down the reports to those that included radar and visual cases and previously undisclosed accounts from commercial and military pilots.

In a letter written in the Columbia Missourian, a news organization staffed by the Missouri School of Journalism, Wickersham cited the fact that the COMETA Report considered some UFO cases as possibly having an otherworldly source.

Even 12 years after that report, Wickersham, co-author of "Confronting Nuclear War: The Role of Education, Religion and the Community" (CreateSpace), feels it's important enough to warrant Congress' opening new, secrecy-free hearings into UFOs. ...

The JFK-UFO Connection?

... While researching materials for his new book, "A Celebration of Freedom: JFK and the New Frontier" (Wasteland Press), Atlanta, Ga., history teacher William Lester used the Freedom of Information Act to get some previously classified documents.

Two of them were written by Kennedy on the same date, Nov. 12, 1963 -- 10 days before his assassination. One was to the CIA director, asking for UFO files; the other was to the NASA administrator, with Kennedy expressing a desire for cooperation with the former Soviet Union on mutual outer space activities."One of his concerns was that a lot of these UFOs were being seen over the Soviet Union and he was very concerned that the Soviets might misinterpret these UFOs as U.S. aggression, believing that it was some of our technology," Lester told AOL News.

"I think this is one of the reasons why he wanted to get his hands on this information and get it away from the jurisdiction of NASA so he could say to the Soviets, 'Look, that's not us, we're not doing it, we're not being provocative. In fact, just to show you that it's not us, what do you think about us working together on the exploration of space?'" Lester added.

Also in his book, Lester reprints an intriguing letter written by Maxwell W. Hunter of the National Aeronautics and Space Council (from the executive office of the president) to Robert F. Packard of the Office of International Scientific Affairs. ...

Triangular UFOs: Close Encounters With Unidentified Dorito-Shaped Objects

... are the mysterious flying, silent, hovering triangles the product of a top-secret military project reportedly called the Tactical Reconnaissance TR-3B aircraft, code-named Astra, as many people have speculated all over the Internet?

Whatever these things are, they've been seen, photographed and videotaped by lots of people around the world, so it doesn't seem likely that everybody's lying or confusing these crafts with the planet Venus or meteors streaking in the sky.

I called on retired Army Col. John Alexander to give some much-needed insight into all of this. For six decades, he's been involved in national security affairs, holding key positions in special operations, intelligence, and research and development.

"A few of these sightings can be attributed to development of secret aircraft, such as stealth vehicles, including Have Blue -- which was the prototype for the F-117 Nighthawk," Alexander told me.

"While there continue to be rumors of more modern experimental craft, they would certainly not display the characteristics reported by observers.

"Specifically, many of these UFOs are illuminated and appear in highly visible venues. Unlike any secret aircraft, they do not make any attempt to remain hidden," said Alexander...

Whenever I either see a new picture or video or read a report about one of these triangular UFOs, it transports me back to 1975 when I had a close encounter with one of these objects. And it was the kind of experience that solidified my interest in this subject, because it was so personal.

I was producing a documentary record album, "UFOs: The Credibility Factor," for CBS Inc. when I got a call from my friend, astronomer J. Allen Hynek, the former scientific adviser on UFOs to the U.S. Air Force and the man who coined the expression "close encounters of the first, second and third kinds."

Hynek asked me to go to Lumberton, N.C., and investigate reports he'd received from several law enforcement agencies about a strange triangular-shaped craft that people had seen a few nights in a row.

Within hours of my arrival in the county sheriff's office, calls started coming in about the return of the UFO. A short time later, I, along with sheriff's deputies and police officers, converged at the side of a big field. It was a starry, moonless evening, and across the far side of the field, moving slowly above a line of trees from our left to right, was an object giving off a red-white appearance.

As we watched, the object stopped moving to the right and instead began to cross the field in our direction. When it got to the point where it was directly above us, we all noticed the same things (and not in any particular order of importance, since it all happened so fast):

• It was about the size of two police cars.


• It made absolutely no sound.


• It was V-shaped or triangular-shaped.


• It had a row of red lights up one side and white lights up the other side, with a larger, single white light at the apex. (See my illustration.)

At one point, the singular white light suddenly became very bright and shined down directly where we were all standing. It was so intense we had to cover our eyes and not look directly at it. After a few seconds of this, the light instantly turned off, the entire object turned a reddish color and, as it began pulsating in this red hue, it started slowly moving off in another direction away from us.

Staying in touch with one another on the car radios, we tracked the thing through a few counties, stopping along the way to talk to other law enforcement officers who told us of their own encounters with the object.

Subsequent calls to Pope Air Force Base in nearby Fayetteville yielded no explanation for what we had all experienced that night.

FBI file that shows how police and army officers saw a UFO explode over Utah

A secret FBI memo detailing how police and army officers witnessed a UFO exploding over Utah has been unearthed.

On April 4 1949 special agents sent a cable marked ‘urgent’ to the bureau director, Edgar Hoover.

The top secret document reveals how an army guard, a policeman and a highway patrol, who were all miles apart, each saw a UFO, which they said exploded over mountains near Logan, north of Salt Lake City.

The memo is one of thousands of previously unreleased classified files that the bureau has made public in a new online resource called The Vault.

Under the title ‘Flying Discs’, the document about the sightings in Utah said the three men each ‘saw a silver coloured object high up approaching the mountains at Sardine Canyon’ that ‘appeared to explode in a rash of fire.’

It added: ‘Several residents [reported] seeing what appeared to be two aerial explosions, followed by falling object.’

Documents show that an earlier UFO sighting had been investigated in Logan in September 1947.

It said numerous witnesses told the FBI they saw ‘flying discs’ in formation that were ‘circling the city at a high rate of speed’.

Also among the files, released for the first time, is a memo from Guy Hottel, the special agent in charge of the Washington field office in 1950, which appears to prove that aliens landed at Roswell, New Mexico.

In the memo, whose subject line is 'Flying Saucers', Agent Hottel reveals that an Air Force investigator had stated that 'three so-called flying saucers had been recovered in New Mexico'.

The investigator gave the information to a special agent, he said. The FBI has censored both the agent and the investigator's identity.

Agent Hottel went on to write: 'They were described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter.

'Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only 3 feet tall,' he stated.

The bodies were 'dressed in a metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a manner similar to the blackout suits used by speed flyers and test pilots.'

He said that the informant, whose identity was censored in the memo, claimed the saucers had been found in New Mexico 'due to the fact that the Government has a very high-powered radar set-up in that area and it is believed the radar interferes with teh controlling mechanism of the saucers'.

He then stated that the special agent did not attempt to investigate further.

The release of the secret memo is likely to fuel conspiracy theorists' claims of a government cover-up.

The town of Roswell in New Mexico became infamous after reports that a flying saucer had crashed in the desert near a military base there on or around July 2, 1947.

The bodies of aliens were said to have been recovered and autopsied by the U.S. military, but American authorities allegedly covered the incident up ...

The newly indexed files include a melting pot of information including internal security inquiries on cabinet members, investigations about ESP and details on undercover operations against subversive groups. Among the highlights:

Guy Hottel - Guy Hottel was a Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office. The information concerning Hottel is in regard to a March 22, 1950, memo he sent to the Director concerning flying saucers.

Notorious B.I.G. - The FBI opened a civil rights/color of law investigation into the murder of rap musician Notorious B.I.G. This release consists of FBI files between 1997 and 2005.

Retired Air Force Major Predicts UFO Sightings at Royal Wedding

The upcoming royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton is expected to be viewed by more than a billion people worldwide -- and possibly a few extraterrestrials, according to at least one former military officer.

George Filer, a retired Air Force major, runs the National UFO Center and says it's common to see UFOs around important events.

"The craft seem to have an interest in anything important," Filer told AOL News. "They've been sighted recently over Libya and near the Japanese tsunami."Filer says his center averages more than 1,000 sightings a month, and he expects to get a few UFO reports from the area surrounding Westminster Abbey, the site of the April 29 wedding.

There are two reasons behind Filer's prediction: In the last few weeks, he's been getting reports from British Royal Air Force pilots who reported seeing UFOs over the English Channel, and, more importantly, he says the royal family is very interested in the UFO phenomenon.

Filer knows this personally because he once had a conversation about UFOs with William's grandfather, Prince Philip."It was around 1961 or '62, when I was a navigator in a tanker," Filer said. "He met with a group of us after a dinner because he wanted to talk about UFOs. He told us that the RAF had stopped sending fighters after UFOs because some of them didn't come back.

"They decided to send tankers, which were nearly as fast as the fighters but could hold 15 hours of fuel, compared to two for the fighters."

Filer says the prince also revealed that his interest in UFOs was more than just concerns of national security -- it was personal."I asked him why he was so interested in UFOs and he explained that his uncle, the Earl Mountbatten, had seen them up close," Filer said.

Even though the meeting took place during the Cold War, Filer discounts the underlying possibility that the UFOs seen during the period were actually Soviet craft.

"That was always a possibility, but it seemed unlikely since these craft were bigger than expected -- it's like an aircraft carrier in space," he said. "However, the Soviets did try to penetrate the airspace of the United Kingdom and the United States quite regularly." ...

Saturn's UFO moons: Bizarrely-shaped Pan and Atlas baffle scientists

They look more like flying-saucers than icy moons, but Pan and Atlas are two of Saturn's strangest satellites.

Scientists have long been puzzled by how the oddly-shaped moons, which are only 20miles across, came to be.

Researchers based at the European Space Agency now think they have some answers after studying several years worth of cosmic images.

They realised that 14 of Saturn's small moons had a very low density - about half that of water ice - and shapes that suggested they had grown out of the rings themselves.

However, they would have needed a jump start as it is not gravitationally possible for small particles to fuse together within the rings.

Therefore, each moon would have started with a massive core that was a leftover from the original collisions that caused the rings. ...

What caused the failure of the MUFON UFO investigation team?

... MUFON (Mutual UFO Network), was the largest international UFO research organization in the world. The STAR Team was a Rapid Response UFO Investigation Unit that was funded by a special program within MUFON known as the SIP Project.

During the period from February 2009 until January 2010, I served as the STAR Team Manager and SIP Project Coordinator. I was also State Director of North Carolina MUFON and Chief Investigator for MUFON of Virginia. This investigative program came to an unexpected end in January of 2010.

Since then, I have received countless phone calls and email requests asking me to explain or confirm details of this project and the controversy that surrounds its premature ending. So many rumors are floating around the internet and many questions have come to the surface. I currently do not have any official association with the MUFON organization, I am no longer a member or an employee of MUFON.

It is not my intention to finger-point or accuse anyone. I will admit that I do not completely understand the motivations of some of the individuals that played roles in MUFON leadership. I do not know what they were thinking, but I do know a lot about what happened!The SIP Project ran for 10 months. During that time we deployed on (investigated) about 65 SIP cases. We also sent data in the form of Significant Reportable Events (about 25 per month) to BAASS as well. At last count we had about 80 STAR Team contract Investigators and 8 Dispatchers. ...

The project ended prematurely in January 31 2010 when the remaining funding ran out. I was instructed by Harzan & Cliff to shut down the Dispatch Operation. Cliff stated that the official reason was to be "that the program was officially over due to an end in the contract".

Iran "builds world's first flying saucer"

It's not clear how far or how high it can fly – or even how big it is and what makes it take off.

But an aircraft created by scientists in Iran is, they claim, the world’s first flying saucer.

Called the Zohal - or Saturn in English - it said the unmanned spaceship is designed for 'aerial imaging' but added it can be used for 'various missions'.

The hardline Fars news agency illustrated its story with a photo of a flying saucer, akin to one appearing in a 1950s Hollywood B-movie, hovering over an unidentified wooded landscape.

The reports gave no indication of the spaceship’s size. But they indicated it was small by claiming, somewhat bizarrely, that it can also fly indoors.

'Easy transportation and launch and flying, making less noise, are some of the advantages of the device,' said ISNA, Iran’s students’ news agency.

'The device belonging to the new generation of vertical flyers is designed for aerial photography.

'It is equipped with autopilot, image stabiliser and GPS and has a separate system for aerial recording with full HD quality!'

Iran, which prides itself on its 2,500 year-old civilisation, is also keen to show that it is at the cutting edge of modern science.

Tehran’s ambitious space programme alarms the West because the same technology used to send missiles into space can be used to build intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Last year the country announced it had successfully fired a rocket that carried a mouse, a turtle and worms into space.

Tehran insists it will be able to send a man into space in nine years' time.

For president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the advances demonstrate the country's ability to push on with its science programme despite international sanctions over its nuclear programme.

The flying saucer was said to have been unveiled at an exhibition of 'strategic technologies' attended by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

At the same time Iran’s Space Agency launched a test spacecraft designed to sustain life in orbit.

The state IRNA news agency said the capsule was carried by a rocket called the Kavoshgar-4 (Explorer-4) 75 miles into orbit before returning to earth. ...

The Kelly-Hopkinville UFO Occupant Sighting

I couldn't stop reading this one... kevinrandle.blogspot.com has an interesting write up on a close encounter of the third kind.

The story officially began early on the evening of August 21, 1955, when Billy Ray Taylor, a young friend of Elmer "Lucky" Sutton, had gone to the well behind the farmhouse, and came running back telling all that he had seen a flying saucer. The object, described as bright with an exhaust that contained all the colors of the rainbow, passed above the house. It continued over of the fields, finally came to a hover, and then descended, disappearing into a gully.

No one in the Sutton house, including Glennie Lanford, Lucky Sutton, Vera Sutton, John Charley (J.C) Sutton, Alene Sutton, three Sutton children, June Taylor and O.P. Baker, believed the story of the flying saucer. None of them considered walking out to the gully to see if something might be down there. The whole idea was preposterous.

Not long after Taylor told his tale, the dog began to bark. Taylor and Lucky Sutton went to investigate that, but the dog ran under the house, not to reappear that night.

Out in the fields, away from the house, was a strange, hovering glow. As it approached, they could see a "small man" inside it. He was about three and a half feet tall, with a large head that looked to be round, and long, thin arms that extended almost to the ground (Seen here). The creature's hands were large and out of proportion with the body, and were shaped more like a bird's talons than a human hand. The two eyes were large and seemed to glow with a yellow fire.

As the creature continued to move toward the house, the two men retreated, found a rifle and a shotgun inside, and then waited. When the creature was within twenty feet of the back door, both men fired at it. The creature flipped back, regained its feet and fled into the darkness.

The two men watched for a few minutes, searching for the creature and then walked into the living room where the others waited. The creature, or one just like it, appeared in front of one of the windows and the men shot at it, hitting it. This one also did a back flip and disappeared.

Now the men decided it was time to go out to learn if they had injured or killed the creature, or animal, or whatever it was. Taylor was the first out, but stopped on the porch under a small overhang. A claw-like hand reached down and touched his hair. Alene Taylor grabbed him to pull him back into the house. Lucky, pushed past him, turned and fired up, at the creature on the roof. It was knocked from its perch.

Someone, probably Taylor, shouted, "There's one up in the tree."

Both Taylor and Lucky shot at it, knocking if from the limb. But it didn't fall to the ground. Instead, it seemed to float. They shot again, and it ran off, into the weeds.

At the same moment, another of the creatures appeared around the corner of the house. It might have been the one that had been on the roof or one of those seen in the backyard. Lucky whirled and fired. The buckshot sounded as if it hit something metallic like an empty bucket. Just as had the others, the little creature flipped over, scrambled to its feet and fled, moving rapidly into the darkness.

Having failed to stop the creatures with either the shotguns or the .22 caliber rifle, Lucky decided to leave them alone. Someone noticed that the creatures only approached from darkened areas. It seemed that they were repelled by the light.

At some point they heard noises on the roof and went out the back door to investigate. One of the creatures was back on the roof. They shot at it, knocked it off the roof, but it floated to a fence some forty feet away rather than falling to the ground. Hit by another shot, it fell from the fence and ran away, seeming to use its arms to aid its locomotion.

Some of the others in the house were still unconvinced that there were real creatures outside, believing instead, that the boys were playing some sort of a prank on them. With the lights in the house turned out, they had taken up a position close to one of the windows. Taylor told Lankford to wait and she would see for herself.

After twenty minutes or so, one of the creatures approached the front of the house. According to Lankford, it looked like a five gallon gasoline can with a head on top of two thin, spindly legs. It shimmered as if made of bright metal.

Lankford, who had been crouching quietly near the window for a long time, tried to stand, but fell with a thud. She shrieked in surprise and the creature jumped to the rear. Taylor fired at it through the screen door.

About three hours after the first creature had been seen, about 11:00 that night, they decided it was time to get out. Everybody ran to the cars. One of the kids was screaming and had to be carried. They all raced to the Hopkinsville police station for help.

At the police station, there was no doubt that the people have been frightened by something. Police officers, and the chief, interviewed after the events, made it clear they believed the people had been scared by something. That doesn't mean they were "attacked" by strange little metallic men, but does mean they were relating what they believed to be the truth to the assembled police officials.

Within minutes, the police were on their way back to the house, with some of the Sutton men in the cars. The police also called the Madisonville headquarters of the Kentucky State Police. A call was even made to the chief, Russell Greenwell at home. He was told that a spaceship had landed at Kelly. Greenwell then told the desk sergeant that it had better not be a joke.

There were now Kentucky State Police, local police, the Chief, and a sheriff's deputy either heading out to the Sutton house, or already there. One of the state troopers, who was only a few miles from Hopkinsville, on the road to Kelly, said that he saw what he called several meteors flash over his car. They moved with a sound like artillery, and he looked up in time to see two of them. They were traveling in a slightly descending arc, heading toward the Sutton house.

The yard around the Sutton house was suddenly filled with cars, and more importantly light. The men tried to point out where the various events had taken place. The chief searched for signs that anyone or everyone had been drinking but found nothing to indicate that anyone had even a beer. Glennie Lankford later said that she didn't allow alcohol in the house.

Once the police arrived, the situation changed radically. Although the atmosphere was tension charged, and some of the police were nervous, they began to search for signs of the invasion from outer space. There were apparent bullet and shotgun blast holes in the screens over the windows, and there was evidence that weapons had been fired, but there were no traces of the alien creatures. The hard packed ground did not take footprints.

The search of the yard and fields around the house revealed little, except a luminous patch where one of the creatures had fallen earlier and was only visible from one angle. The chief said that he saw it himself and there was definitely some kind of stain on the grass. There is no evidence that anyone took samples for analysis later.

But with no real evidence to be found, with no alien creatures running around, and with no spacecraft hidden in the gully, the police began to return to their regular, mundane duties. By two in the morning, only the Suttons were left at the house.

A half an hour or so after the last of the police left, and with the lights in the house down, Glennie Lankford saw one of the creatures looking in the window. She alerted her son, Lucky, who wanted to shoot at it, but she told him not to. She didn't want a repeat of the situation earlier in the night. Besides, the creatures had done nothing to harm anyone during the first episode.

But Lucky didn't listen to her. He shot at the creature but the shot was no more effective than those fired earlier in the night. Other shots were fired with no apparent affect. The little creatures bounced up each time they were hit and then ran away.

The little beings kept reappearing throughout the night, the last sighting occurring just a half an hour before sunrise. That was the last time that any of the beings were seen by any of the Suttons or their friends.

Although it seems that military personnel, from Fort Campbell, Kentucky, did visit the Sutton house, and interviews with the witnesses were conducted in 1955, an investigation by the Air Force didn't take place until two years later. According to Project Blue Book files, apparently, in August, 1957, prior to the publication of a magazine article that would review the case, someone in the Air Force decided they should "investigate."

In a letter from the ATIC at Wright-Patterson, to the commander of Campbell Air Force Base, Wallace W. Elwood wrote, "1. This Center requests any factual data, together with pertinent comments regarding an unusual incident reported to have taken place six miles north of Hopkinsville, Kentucky on subject date [21 August 1955]. Briefly, the incident involved an all night attack on a family named Sutton by goblin-like creatures reported to have emerged from a so-called 'flying saucer.'"

Later in the letter, Elwood wrote, "3. Lacking factual, confirming data, no credence can be given this almost fantastic report. As the incident has never been officially reported to the Air Force, it has not taken official cognizance of the matter." Here, once again is the Air Force attitude that if the case has not been reported to them, then it simply doesn’t exist. ...

Police interviewed neighbouring farmhouses, whose residents were also distressed and reported to the police strange lights, strange sounds, and of hearing the gun battle at the Sutton farmstead. Police and photographers who visited the home saw many bullet holes and hundreds of spent shells, and further discovered what Clark describes as "an odd luminous patch along a fence where one of the beings had been shot, and, in the woods beyond, a green light whose source could not be determined."^[2] Though the investigation was inconclusive, Daniels et al. writes, "Investigators did conclude, however, that these people were sincere and sane and that they had no interest in exploiting the case for publicity. The patch sample, although photographed, was never collected and had mysteriously disappeared by the noon the next day. "^[7]

... In addition to Ledwith's sketches, Pfc. Gary F. Hodson of the 101st Airborne Division stationed at nearby Fort Campbell sketched the creatures based on eyewitness descriptions. The "men" were described as approximately 3 feet tall and either being silver in color or wearing silver colored clothing that lit up or glowed when the invaders shouted to each other. All of the witnesses agreed to a remarkable degree as to the appearance of the creatures, and never changed their stories.

Commercial Airline Pilot Saw Phoenix Lights

It's been almost 14 years since Phoenix became the center of the UFO-sighters' universe, thanks to a phenomenon known as the Phoenix Lights.

"Greg" is a commercial airline pilot who asked not to be identified. On that night- March 13, 1997- he and his wife were driving home in the West Valley after a date night."All of a sudden, with some urgency, my wife said, 'What are those lights?'" Greg said.

They pulled over to get a closer look. Greg had spent years flying choppers in Vietnam and fighter jets at Luke Air Force Base, so he brushed off the odd sighting - at first.

"Then I noticed, 'Wow, no anti-collision lights, no navigation lights,'" said Greg. "I kind of just stood there, watching the lights go overhead. And then I realized, 'Wow, I don't really know what these are!'"

Greg and his wife are not alone. Thousands in Phoenix, Nevada, Tucson, even in northern Mexico have testified to the same close encounter: a V-shaped formation of five lights, moving silently, slowly, at a low altitude.

"I was asking myself, 'Well, what is this?' because I've spent years of my life looking into the sky," said Greg.

Explanations for the so-called Phoenix Lights are as numerous as the sightings themselves. The U.S. military admitted to dropping flares that night southwest of the city, but that doesn't explain the numerous sightings of an actual black craft with up to seven lights moving silently overhead.

"I've actually dropped flares from the air in Vietnam," said Greg. "What I saw wasn't flares."

Conspiracy theorists and extraterrestrialists jumped on the event, insisting this is proof that we earthlings are not alone. Then-Gov. Fife Symington would admit 10 years later that he saw them, too, calling the lights "otherworldly."

As a commercial airline pilot, Greg won't necessarily go there.

"I do wish that I could see them again," Greg said. "When I fly at night now, I kind of keep an eye out, because I'd really like to see that V of lights again someday."

Oval object emitted sound of ’dog whistle’

Two South Carolina witnesses in Greenwood report a large, black, oval-shaped object moving overhead with four lights that emitted the sound of a "dog whistle", according to March 8, 2011, testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

"As it got closer the sound got louder," the witness stated. "I also saw what I thought might be some sort of girders or support structure on the underside of the vehicle. I am enclosing a drawing of the underside of the vehicle in this report."

The object moved in one direction during the entire sightings and seemed to be slower than a jet and faster than "any lighter than air craft I am aware of."

The witness states that others in the area also saw the same object.

The great UFO hoax

Back in 1967 a group of students strategically placed UFOs across the country. Two 'landed' in Kent.  ... 1967 was a huge year for UFO sightings in the UK and a group of engineer apprentices at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in Farnborough decided to make the headlines.

Through meticulous planning they created a fleet of UFOs and planted them on the same line, the same distance apart, across the country from the Bristol Channel to the Kent coast. In Kent, one 'landed' on a golf course in Bromley and another on the Isle of Sheppey both to be found by members of the public.

The discoveries caused quite a stir and even Ministry of Defence was alerted before it was realised that the whole thing was an elaborate hoax. Here is some BBC archive footage of a Kent 'space ship' as it is being inspected by the authorities:

A "war of the worlds" rag week hoax by aircraft engineering apprentices was treated as a real alien invasion of Britain – for a few hours at least, according to newly released Ministry of Defence files. The army's southern command, four police forces, bomb disposal units, RAF helicopters and the MoD's intelligence branch were all mobilised in the early hours of Monday 4 September 1967 to meet the threat.

They went into action after the police and RAF were flooded with calls from the public reporting the discovery of six small "flying saucers" in locations in a perfect line across southern England from Sheppey to the Bristol Channel. It was not until a Scotland Yard bomb disposal squad with orders to check one of the objects with portable X-ray equipment arrived at Bromley police station, south London, that the hoax was uncovered – the Ever Ready batteries were a bit of a giveaway.

Another of the "saucers" was sent to be examined by Home Office scientists at Aldermaston and a third was inspected by the chief designer of the guided weapons division of the British Aircraft Corporation. One saucer which was found at Chippenham, Wiltshire, was blown up in a controlled explosion. The Whitehall papers released at the National Archives show that within Whitehall the "1967 flying saucer hoax" was regarded at the MoD as an "obviously very successful practical joke". ....

UFO lights up Brazil skies: Footage of 'flying saucer' hovering over Sao Paolo

The grey, saucer-shaped object could be seen for nearly a minute before suddenly disappearing in a bright flash of light.

The spectacle is followed by two more mysterious bursts of light.

Brazilian television channel G1 obtained the footage from some motorists who spotted the object near the town of Agudos.

The motorists, who the channel did not identify, said they rushed from their car to film the object with a hand-held camera.

G1 reports that the two camera-operators said that the earth shook just as the two blasts of light appeared – a fact that was corroborated by other people nearby at the time.

Yet no seismic activity has been reported in the area, the nearest tremors occurring south, in Chile.

Philip Cavaca, an expert in video editing, told G1 that the two that reported the sighting are nothing more than expert hoaxers.

‘It can be seen in one frame. When the truck goes by, you can tell that the UFO was moved, which is unnoticeable to the naked eye,’ Cavaca said.

By freezing the image you can see the exact frame in which the so-called UFO alters, Cavaca claimed.

But many internet users, viewing the footage after it went viral, believe otherwise. ...
