Art contest winner is just pants

Winner of 2009 Turnip PrizeA pair of baggy old underpants took the top prize in Somerset's rejoinder to the world of modern art.

The Turnip Prize for bad art is presented by the New Inn in Wedmore and timed to coincide with the slightly better-known Turner Prize award.

The winning work, cheekily entitled Manhole Cover, was proudly displayed above the bar.

Landlord Trevor Prideaux presented the "artist" - who called herself Frank Van Bough - with a turnip.

In a ceremony broadcast live on BBC Points West, Frank said she was "completely underwhelmed" at winning the prize.

Little effort required

Co-organiser James Timms said the contest had reached "new standards of low".

The spoof award - which is voted for by Wedmore residents - was first given in 1999.

Entrants can be disqualified for putting too much effort into their artistic offerings.

This year's runners ups included a fence panel entitled Don't Take A Fence and a bunch of naked Barbie dolls in an old birdcage.

That work was entitled Knickerless Cage.
