So disgusting. What the hell is wrong with people? Two and half hours with multiple eye-witnesses and no one called for help?
Something I read said the police are watching for anyone who posts video of this attack so they can use it as evidence. People not only stood around, they also made videos, like it was some kind of damn rock concert. Close the school and administer pscyh evals to everyone. Check the water supply too. Something has caused some brain damage in those kids. I can't believe that anyone would do this without being mentally ill.
And boys, if you have any functioning brain cells left, don't use them to kid yourself that she will be okay because she has only non-life threatening external injuries. What this does to a person, quite often, is that it destroys her sense of self worth to such a degree that she eventually ends up killing herself.

Investigators said as many as 15 people, all males, stood around watching the assault, but did not call police or help the victim, a 15-year-old student at Richmond High School in suburban San Francisco.
“As people announced over time that this was going on, more people came to see, and some actually participated,” Gagan said.Authorities had interviewed the victim, and the search for other attackers and bystanders who watched and did not report the rape was in “full-court press,” according to Gagan.
“We have checked Facebook and YouTube to try to find any revealing evidence,” he said. “We’re looking in particular to see if anyone posted any video of the incident.”
Several other individuals were detained at the scene but not arrested, Simon said.The attack occurred on school grounds as the annual homecoming dance was under way inside the school Saturday night, authorities said.
The victim was found unconscious and “brutally assaulted” under a bench shortly before midnight Saturday, after police received a call from someone in the area who had overheard people at the assault scene “reminiscing about the incident,” Gagan said.
“She ended up with those guys under her own will because she knew one of the boys who had gone to the high school before,” Gagan said. “Right now, we’re looking at toxicology reports to determine her blood-alcohol content and to determine if she was drugged.”
According to authorities, the victim was flown to an area hospital in critical condition. She was in stable condition Monday, police said.
“This just gets worse and worse the more you dig into it,” Gagan said. “It was like a horror movie after looking at the evidence. I can’t believe not one person felt compelled to help her.”

What makes this crime so shocking is that police say at least 20 people were involved in the rape or stood and watched the crime without going for help.
"These are witnesses that are encouraging and allowing behavior to continue," Gagan said.
For those who watched and did nothing, it may be morally reprehensible, but it's not illegal.
"Although this is a very difficult crime to hear about, the fact is California law does not impose an affirmative obligation on anyone to do anything when you are watching a crime," said Trent Copeland, a legal analyst. - cbsnews

I feel your anger and I have just as much, but an eye for an eye doesn't work. If it did, the Middle East would be the most peaceful place on earth. Instead it is the most violent. The reason is, revenge creates a cycle of violence. To stop sexual and other violence what is really needed is education. Changing people's attitudes is the most lasting form of prevention.
I guess you already said that... if an eye for an eye works 1/9th of the time (and fails 8/9ths of the time) then it is obvious that getting some bigger guys to gang rape each of these guys is not the answer. Life in prison sounds about right ... which might result in the same thing anyway. My preference, thinking about compassion, is that doctors/scientists get inside their brains and remove the diseased parts. Then they could function again, with some rehabilitation, as the girl's personal slaves for life. Just kidding. Slavery is another wrong that should not be added. But that's what my emotions say.

I graduated from Richmond high in 2003 and it is saddening and depressing to see how things do not change. Richmond High as well as the city it self are entangled in a vicious cycle of violence, poverty, desperation and ignorance. In particular, the youth is caught in the middle of that entanglement and therefore reinforcing the vicious cycle. The youth of Richmond need to be enlightened and given a sense of self and leadership to be able to stand up for their moral values and not follow others like monkeys to commit hideous acts like this one.
The middle east is a mess because mobs carry out their own vengeance. We need to implement harsh punishment in the judicial system. These guys should be put to sleep. We have problems with sexual offenders who recidivism rate is so high its nearly a gaurentee they will commit again. These guys should be castrated no doubt.
It is reprehensible that these monster bystanders should go unpunished. If they cheered on and encouraged this atrocity they should be considered intellectual actors to the crime and charged with aiding and abbeting. There should be country-wide passage of legislation of Bad Samaritan laws which punish those who can, w/o putting themselves at risk, stop or report the comission of a crime. All these bystanders had to do was call 911 w/o implicating themselves further, but their lack of a moral base prevented them from it. The aunt of one of the arrested, who claims he was a bystander only, alleges that he did not report the crime for fear of being hurt. That excuse is not only laughable but offensive. For the time being, the community should demand the publoc relase of not only all those who participated in this crime but of the bystanders also and if the law cannot do anything to make them pay, let the communith do it by ostricizing and shaming these monsters. There was a famous case whereby a man saw the rape of a child by his friend and did nothing to stop it. He had been admittd to UCLA and when he reported for classes the students staged a walk-out in every class as they, rightly so, refused to be seating in the same classroom and breathing the same air as that of a monster. Eventually he was kicked out of the school bc the sudent population refused to have him there. This type of community action is necessary here. These bystanders should be kicked out of the school, their names publically released and colleges (if any of them would go or applied anyway) rescind their accepances. Let community outrage makeup where the law is lacking.

It seems most want to punish the offenders, while the reasons for the offenses stay within the people who committed crime and their families.
Why doesn't anyone focus on American culture, which has one of the, if not the highest crime rates, but most definitely the highest number of prisoners in the world.

Sure, it'll "get your rocks off," but what is the larger good of that? But, we call that "justice," but it's only our why at looking at. Justice is not necessarily synonymous to revenge in other countries (but, Gosh! those other countries have less crime!)
Why doesn't anyone look at our history? Why are young people so interested in sex and/or power to force themselves on innocent others? You know, it was NOT always this way. I suggest, if you want to really make a difference, study your history. There specific reasons for the changes in our society. They didn't just happen by chance.

Yelling at kids and calling them stupid is not going to help them. What kids need to know is that, if they do have a choice, a single poor choice as teenager can lead to a lifetime of problems forming normal healthy relationships. Stephanie, as I said, I think your sense of self got messed with a few years ago. You need to fix it to meet your full potential as you go forward. People are worthy of love and attention for creativity, the way they care for others, and many other reasons that have nothing to do with physical attractiveness or the number of lovers they have. You may know that in your head, but your response showed a hidden belief that you feel you are of value as a person because a lot of people wanted to have sex with you. That kind of self-value (I have a nice body, I am good at sex, etc.) is not bad as part of a whole package, but if you let that become your identity you will miss out on your share of deep genuine love.

I agree so much with what some other individuals are saying. I am a Junior at Miramonte High School, and live down the street from Richmond High. I am so happy that I don't attend that school. I agree that i can actually picture something like that happening because the schools faculty and teachers dont care. They need to step it up and crack down on that school, and run a learning center not a play ground. I personally know people who have gone to Richmond and they say its not a place where you feel safe. Compared to other school, in Ca, Richmond has got to be one of the worst. The faculty and teachers are idiots, and the students have no adult guids. They run their own lives and make their own decisions as early as 12 years old. Its ubsurd.

I don't think you should be too surprised. Things like this are not uncommon throughout history. Just look at the comments to this post and you'll see people sometimes enjoy violent acts in their minds.
She wanted it? No she did not. According to the key witness they jumped on her when she was disoriented, almost tearing off her dress and overpowering her. She resisted and screamed and they beat and kicked her, telling her to be shut up. In fact she was beat and kicked in the head so severely that her face was blue and purple afterwards and she was in such critical condition that she needed to be airlifted to the hospital. One of the accused is charged with assault with a weapon causing serious bodily harm.
They repeatedly raped her for more than two hours, at times with an object an nearly killed her while doing it. Details of the case also suggest that it is very likely that she was targeted well in advance. One of the accused, Cody Smith, who lured her to the secluded crime scene was someone she thought of as a friend and someone she could trust and feel safe with. It is quite possible that he faked such friendship in order to take advantage of her trust.
I am very sorry to hear that you were so horrifically abused and it is unbelievable that you would blame the victim. Some at the school publicly did so and even worse, some threatened people who were trying to find more information and copies of the pictures and videos reportedly taken so they could help the police and threats have been made against the victim.
This and that so many cheered them on reveals much as to why most rapes go unreported and why the rapists felt confident that they could get away with brutally violating and assaulting the victim for hours while so many we aware of it.
They didn't "beat her for sex". They did it because they wanted to hurt her while they tortured, violated and abused her.
The one who lured her to the crime scene and charged with participating in the rape is white. The young woman who called 911 is hispanic and many that have publicly expressed outrage are not white.
While it is possible that some that raped her were motivated in part by racial hatred it is virtually impossible to determine. It is more important to look at what they did and this alone is enough to put them away for life. If racial hate or misogyny played a part it it pales to the vicious sadism and enjoyment they took in the suffering another human being.
I tell you, when I heard about the horrible and vicious way the victim was violated and assaulted it made this atheist wish he could believe in hell.

As a rape survivor myself, in circumstances very similar to this girl's, I can say that I dont believe in an eye for an eye. I wouldn't wish rape even on my rapist, and it was much more satisfying to see him sent to prison for 7 years (maximum sentence for rape in UK) and the fact that people keep going on about the attackers races is disgusting and unfair to minority communities, just because these particular black/muslim/hispanic/spanish guys decided to be rapists it doesnt mean you should label all of these people as troublemakers, or rapists, or terrorists.
