Sacramento County sheriff's deputies worked to corral two zebras roaming the streets of Carmichael Saturday night.
Residents in one neighborhood were startled after the zebras were seen running through streets. One of the zebras was spotted on Fair Oaks Boulevard.
Zebra No. 2 was temporarily corralled by concerned citizens. The zebra was still bleeding after it ran into a car, witnesses said. They said it happened on Manzanita Avenue and Winding Way in Carmichael.
"There we saw the aftermath of an accident. When we asked the lady what happened she said, 'I was just hit with a zebra,' and she couldn't believe it either," witness Tom Turner said.
"All of a sudden I said to my husband, 'Look,' and he goes, 'What?' I go, 'It's a zebra,' and he didn't believe me," witness Teresa Turner said.
Tim Tanaka took charge by roping off an area to keep the animal safe while a crowd of people gathered to watch.
Tanaka said he was concerned for the animal that she might "run out to the street." He said he was glad the crowd was there to prevent the animal from heading in their direction.
The zebras escaped from an animal training farm at Sutter and Marshall avenues in Carmichael.
