Israeli: Palestinian prime minister could be targeted for assassination

Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said if Hamas resumes suicide bombings, its prime minister designate Ismail Haniyeh could be targeted for assassination, reports CBS News correspondent Robert Berger (audio). Mofaz said Hamas is a terrorist group and no one will be immune. Hamas responded that the statement reflects the bloody character of the Zionist enemy.

Israel's policy of targeted killings has proven effective, and will continue, the defense minister said.

"There is no question about its efficacy," Mofaz said. "Look what happened to Hamas in the years it conducted an untrammeled suicide bombing war against us. When we started the targeted killings, the situation changed," he said, referring to Hamas' suspension of attacks.

Dozens of militants have died in targeted Israeli air strikes, including Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

Asked if Haniyeh would be a target if Hamas were to resume attacks, Mofaz replied: "If Hamas, a terror organization that doesn't recognize agreements with us and isn't willing to renounce violence, presents us with the challenge of having to confront a terror organization, then no one there will be immune. Not just Ismail Haniyeh. No one will be immune."

Targeted assassinations are insane. This terrorist act to fight terrorism only causes more hate and fuels perpetual war in the Middle East. This diseased Revenge-o-rama(tm) Vision should not be allowed to spread to my country. Fellow Americans, don't be fooled. In the US we treat criminals as criminals, but as humans. Guilt by association is not valid. In the US we don't punish friends and relative of criminals. We punish those who commit crimes. Don't let a cure be worse than the cause or the cure becomes the cause. Don't be stupid.
