The Mysterious Coral Castle and Moving Rocks with Sound, and LRAD in Iraq

In the city of Homestead, Florida sits a strange stone structure created by eccentric Edward Leedskalnin. No one really knows why it was built or how, but considering each of the megalithic coral stones weigh more than most men could move alone, the emergence of the Coral Castle remains an impressive mystery.

Edward never allowed anyone to witness the building of Coral Castle. A suspicious and private man, he worked at night by lantern, behind large walls he constructed. Reports from neighbors claim he levitated the blocks, some weighing 30 tons, twice the weight of the largest blocks in the Great Pyramid of Giza.



Teenagers living in the area claimed they saw him one night, “singing to the massive stone, and it moved like it was a hydrogen balloon, easily settling into place.” By his own account, Edward claimed, “I have discovered the secrets of the pyramids, and have found out how the Egyptians and the ancient builders of Peru, Yucatan, and Asia, with only primitive tools, raised and set in place blocks of stone weighing many tons.”

I rememeber hearing this as a boy. How could he move rocks with sound? I heard the same rumor about the Moai on Easter Island, but I can't find anything about that now. '

Here's a hint: Sound is a pressure wave and it can be focused.  Check out this story on the LRAD, for example.

From HowStuffWorks: The LRAD uses has an array of piezoelectric transducers. A transducer is simply a device that changes one kind of energy into another kind of energy. In this case, it changes electrical impulses into sound. ... Any sound over 90 dB can damage a person's hearing [ref]. So the LRAD can threaten the hearing of anyone in its path.

• Lawn mower: 90 dB


• LRAD maximum normal volume: 120 dB


• Threshold of pain: 130 dB, depending on the person's tolerance


• LRAD maximum volume with override: 146 dB (continual), 151 dB (burst)

They are deployed in Iraq and are being used to drive people crazy according to Lo's WordPress blog:

Many small fishing and cargo boats ply these waters, and it’s often hard to get the attention of the crews. With LRAD, you just aim it at a member of the crew, and have an interpreter “speak” to the sailor. It was noted that the guy on the receiving end was sometimes terrified, even after he realized it was that large American destroyer that was talking to him. This apparently gave the army guys some ideas, for there are now rumors in Iraq of a devilish American weapon that makes people believe they are hearing voices in their heads. ... Islamic terrorists tend to be superstitious and, of course, very religious. LRAD can put the “word of God” into their heads. If God, in the form of a voice that only you can hear, tells you to surrender, or run away, what are you gonna do?

But could sound move levitate objects? Yes, and it has been done, but only with very small light weight objects as far as I've been able to find.

Acoustic levitation is possible because of the non-linear effects of intense sound waves.
