Microsoft cutting 5000 jobs

Microsoft Corp. said Thursday morning it will cut 5000 jobs over the next 18 months, including 1400 today, and announced earnings well below previous estimates.

... Techies step back and marvel at the creative destruction at hand here. Intel and Microsoft are potentially cannibalizing their own businesses. That’s wonderful for netbook fans. As a business decision it’s questionable. Of course, Microsoft has no choice. XP on netbooks is better than the alternative–Linux. - zd

Demand comes from affortable utility. That means speed and ease of use for what people actually want to do, not hype, not gloss. Make the next OS (Windows 8?) faster, cheaper and lighter than XP. Make it modular and charge $1 each for useful significant add-ons.
