Al Franken is winner of Minnesota Senate race, court rules

MinnesotaAl Franken is one step closer to finally claiming Minnesota's contested Senate seat.

A Minnesota court confirmed Monday that Franken, a Democrat, won the most votes in his 2008 Senate race against Republican incumbent Norm Coleman.

Franken actually gained more votes from the election challenge than Coleman, who brought the legal action in the first place.

Coleman immediately announced plans to appeal. His petition could further delay the seating of Minnesota's second senator for weeks.

"It's time that Minnesota, like every other state," has two senators, a jovial Franken said outside his Minneapolis townhouse.

After a statewide recount and seven-week trial, Franken stands 312 votes ahead. Nearly 3million votes were cast in the race.
