Man's collection of empty crisps packets worth a small fortune

Dave ValentineThe avid collector reckons his 500 empty bags, some of which date to 1984, are worth £10,000.

His haul includes Twiglets, Monster Munch and Hula Hoops, plus varieties which are no longer made, such as Griddles and Ringos.

Some people have offered him up to £10 for a single packet.

‘That’s not a bad rate of inflation when you consider they cost about 5p at the time,’ said Mr Valentine, who began his collection in 1984 with a packet of BBQ beef Hula Hoops.

‘As a kid, I didn’t have the money to collect football stickers like my mates but I didn’t want to be left out, so I started collecting crisp bags.

‘The designs are so retro and cool. Crisp bags these days are a bit boring in comparison.

‘People love the nostalgia of looking at the old packets – it takes them back in time and they get a real kick of that.’

Museums and collectors have shown interest in buying the collection but Mr Valentine, 32, of Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, has vowed not to sell.

‘The packets are mementos of my childhood,’ he said. ‘People have thrown big figures asking what it would take to buy the whole lot but it would take something spectacular.

Some bags even have little crumbs and salt still in them. They are my antique crisps and I am proud of them as a collection.’

I've never seen these. What are crisps? Oh, potato and corn chips. Got it.  I guess they got stuck calling them crisps because they'd used up the word "chips" on fries.
