Veteran fury at Blackpool memorial sex act

Blackpool war memorialWar veterans are calling for a woman who urinated and performed a sex act on Blackpool's war monument to be jailed.

Wendy Lewis was convicted in her absence of outraging public decency at Blackpool Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The 32-year-old, of Princess Street, who failed to appear in court, was caught on CCTV relieving herself before performing a sex act on a man on 7 May.

Ian Coleman, president of the town's British Legion, said: "It's a sacrilege to those who didn't come home."

He called for the magistrates to jail her and not just "give her a slap on the wrists".

'Respect for mankind'

Make war, not love... or we will have people with guns imprison you until you see the logic of our warlike ways. Damn dirty non-violent apes.

But seriously, this reaction is idol worship. "Desecration" and "sacrilege" are words used by zealots.  War is a religion? Not everyone believes.

On the flip side, seeing Coleman's point, you hippies, don't be so gross. Respect the weird war worshipers. If you have to do things outside to get your kicks, go find a nice private place in the woods.

The reaction isn't idol worship and not all symbols are religious. The memorial is to honour the lives lost preventing the genocide of an entire race of people and for the freedoms we enjoy today.

If you feel “desecration” and “sacrilege” are too strong it's at the very least a crime being commited regardless of the location and extremely disrespectful to a symbol of sacrifice for the freedoms that she seems to be taking to excess.

Perhaps you need to suffer loss from war to understand.

The woman is no witch. She hasn't done anything wrong. The memorial stands for freedom! I lost my grandad bombing Germany. He has No memorial. This woman is a free woman. A woman made free by the memorial of those very close to her! Next you'll want to stone her!

To my way of thinking I have suffered a loss from every person who has ever died in a war. War is the ultimate lack of imagination, of failed communication, of greed and of fear. Think of every person as a part of yourself, which is a biological truth, and you will see war as a manifestation of the self-loathing of our species. Yes, cancer in the body must be stopped, but there are more skillful ways than killing off good parts of yourself in a barbaric overreaction. Look at the causes, the seeds of insanity that lead to war and you can prevent it. Confront paranoia and xenophobia with honestly, courage and persistent communication. The world powers are gearing up for a final showdown. We can prove our ability to cooperate calmly like adults, or we can go extinct like screaming children. Our choice.

Urinating anywhere is wrong but the fact that it was a veterans memorial does not make it any worse. The punishment needs to fit the crime, so she should just clean it up or something. As for the sex, well sex is a beautiful thing so they should be honored that she chose the memorial. Also war is a terrible unjustified thing, and people need to stop giving into war propaganda by showing every war and every soldier the upmost respect without any other merit.
