Vatican warns of 'wayward' Opus Angelorum sect + The truth about Angels

The Vatican has warned Catholic bishops around the world to monitor carefully a secretive traditionalist sect which prays to angels to combat demons.

Opus Angelorum, which means "the work of angels" in Latin, was founded by an Austrian housewife who died in 1978.

She claimed to have identified the angels and demons who were battling for the control of human beings.

The Church said some members of the sect were carrying out "activities that disturb the ecclesiastical community".

The BBC's David Willey in Rome says Opus Angelorum first attracted the attention of the Vatican 30 years ago, after the death of its founder, a woman from the Austrian Tyrol called Gabriele Bitterlich.

Bitterlich claimed to have been in contact with an archangel and to have written down the names of hundreds of angels and demons, our correspondent says. ...

According to a letter sent by the head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in 1992 members of Opus Angelorum agreed to follow the doctrine of the Church in return for official recognition.

"In particular, [its] members were not to make use of the 'names' of angels derived from the alleged private revelations attributed to Mrs Gabriele Bitterlich and they were not to teach, spread or make use of the theories originating from these alleged revelations," Cardinal William Levada said.

... Our correspondent says Opus Angelorum has no known connection with the best-selling novel, Angels and Demons, written by Dan Browne, who has been criticised by the Vatican for his fictional works involving superstition in the Catholic Church.

Yeah, don't read their super secret web site.
Opus Sanctorum Angelorum, the Work of the Holy Angels, is an international movement within the Catholic Church faithful to the Magisterium. It is ordered to Familypromoting devotion to the holy angels and a covenant bond with them through a consecration approved by the Church, so that the holy angels may lead us more effectively to God.

Okay, boys and girls, gather around, m'kay. I have something to tell you. Now, about these "angels"... they are real. (We will cover "demons" next week. ) I can show you the seven archangels. I know where they are right now. I have pictures of them. Huh? Yes, follow along...

"Angel", the word in English comes from the Greek "angelos" which means messenger. Angels weren't always messengers of God's word, however.

The word allaku in the story of Gilgamesh means both 'wanderer' and 'messenger'.

Planets were referred to messengers or wanderers. Wandering and giving news, being a messenger, was a very important job long ago!

The planets were called messengers because they wandered in the sky compared to the fixed motion of the stars... especially Mercury, that speedy god with wings on his head... because the planet Mercury is the fastest moving visible planet in the sky.

Here are the gods (sky wanderers) in the Bablyonian pantheon:
Sun (Shamash), Moon (Sin), Mercury (Nabu), Venus (Ishtar), Mars (Nergal), Jupiter (Marduk), Saturn (Ninurta)

Yes, the Babylonians revered the seven heavenly objects as gods. These were the prototype for the Judeo-Christian archangels.

Kabbalah, the Hebrew word (קבלה), means tradition that is handed on. Kabbalah is a religion thousands of years old which was the basis of Jewish mysticism. Kabbalah appointed angels to the seven traditional planets (instead of calling them gods):
Sol (Michael), Luna (Gabriel), Mercury (Raphael), Venus (Hanael), Mars (Zamael), Jupiter (Sachiel), Saturn (Cassiel)

Those responsible for the Kabbalah, experienced a period of exile in Babylon which brought contact with Parsee and Zoroastrian influences. Zoroastrianism, after arriving in Western Iran, absorbed two Babylonianised Iranian deities: Anahiti and Tiri.
Sun (SHAMASH/MITHRA), Venus (ISHTAR/AN_HITI), Mercury(NABU/TIRI )

You see, the planets remain the same, but the names get mixed and matched as different groups intermingle and fight for dominance. The Book of Revelation (written around 69 AD) has 7 archangels standing before God - They are named in the Book of Enoch which Saint Jude quotes:
Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Saraquael, Ramiel, Raguel, Uriel

There are strong parallels, by the way, between the stories of Mithra the Sun, and Jesus the Son. As Jesus said (John 8:12), "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness". Indeed, it would seem to an observer that if one walked fast enough, one could follow the setting sun and never be in darkness. That's an illusion.   Actually, depending on your location on earth and the time of the year, you'd have to walk/fly up to 1,038 miles per hour.  So, following Jesus,  you see, walking with Jesus is no easy task! You'd need a Bloodhound SSC, an F-22 Raptor, or a SR-71 Blackbird, etc.  Modern fighter pilots can "walk" with Jesus, but only while the fuel lasts.

Are some lights clicking on? The ancients observed the heavens. They saw the "gods" in the sky, among the stars, moving about, wandering on their unknown errands. Remember, everyone back then assumed the earth was stationary.

Astrology was big time. Astronomy did not exist. The motion of the planets was a complete mystery. That motion of the beings of light in the sky with god (planets!), was thought to influence human behavior. This belief continues in astrology today.

How could the planets influence human behavior? The Moon (Sin), thought at that time to be just another sky god like the other planets, was observed to influence (correlate with) women's monthly menstrual cycles, along with mood swings(!) caused by hormonal changes. This irrationality, the "wages of sin", bothered men so much that they took over to dominate religion. And women, for the most part, were grateful. Yes, angels battle demons for control of humans.

Worship of heavenly bodies is why we have seven week days, a day for each of the major gods in the sky.
Sun-day (Michael), Moon-day(Gabriel), Tuesday (Chamuel/Mars), Wednesday(Raphael/Mercury), Thursday(Zadkiel/Jupiter), Friday(Haniel/Venus), Saturn-day(Cassiel)

The English "Tuesday" is  derived from Old English Tiwesdæg and Middle English Tewesday. This was a loan translation of Latin dies Martis, originally associating the day with the planet Mars, but the Germanic name translates Mars, the god of war, as Teiwaz (Old English Tiw)... The astrological sign for the planet Mercury represents Wednesday -- Dies Mercurii to the Romans. In English, we have "Woden's Day", since the Roman god Mercury was identified with Woden in northern Europe. ... In the Hindu religion, Thursday is Guruvaar, from Guru, the Sanskrit name for Jupiter ... The word for Friday in most Romance languages is derived from Latin dies Veneris, "day of Venus" ... In most of the Indian languages, Friday is Shukravar (or a derived variation of Sukravar), named for Shukra, the Sanskrit name of the planet Venus. - wiki

When Christianity took hold, and people shifted to monotheism, you can now see why Sunday remained the one holy day, the day of worship of the one remaining sky gods.

The angels are very old, ancient beings. They are up there in the heavens (sky) watching, (shining) over (above) us. Yes, angels are watching over me tonight... They are there even when I can't see them, such as when it is cloudy....

So, if you believe in angels, you actually came to this belief due to misunderstandings of the writings of ancient people who were worshiping the planets as gods. And isn't that a bit silly?

No, the Vatican does not want the angels named, by Opus Angelorum or anyone else. If the truth was discovered, they'd be out of business and a billion Catholics would simultaneously face palm.

You underestimate the catholic church and christianity as a whole Xeno. The pope and all of his cardinals could denounce god, jesus and the holy scriptures. There would be a mild flap, a few hail Marys said and then the whole process would just carry on as if nothing had happened.
Blind faith is a strange thing and not easily turned.

Hey Xeno, like your blog. I thats the cut down strait forward truth of it, but have you read any of the Nag Hammadi stuff or the The Apocryphon of John? If I am reading it right I think it says that we were not directly created by GOD, but a creation of another Angel/Demigod tryng to create minions and oops, created humans and unknowingly gave up his "divine light" to us. Which would explain why Lucifer, the "light-bearer" (possibly our creator) wants souls to get back his divinty....I haven't really got too deep into it yet to be sure, but I think the notion that we were created by the devil/(or something other than God) is the big secret of the Masons/Catholic church, weird stuff anyhow....

Indeed, haven't we seen this happen in other realms of authority and power?

I sometimes wonder, if the 9-11 conspiracy theorists were a bit more enthusiastic filing charges, which were followed with court proceedings and even a few hangings (if lucky), what would be the overall result?

Ok, so perhaps the necon element of the right would disappear, but things generally would continue as before. There would still be a right-wing; there still be an industrial military complex, and probably, after a while, endless wars.

Thus, the reason, I think, it's so important to look at the institutions of power and authority, not the people, who make them up, who come and go, and, not the dated particulars that quickly become historical events; that is, if we really want change.

I think you'll find some "truth" as believed by people from long ago, people who knew so much less than you know now, and who therefore invented some wild stories. But ancient writings that claim lucifer as the creator would get some raised eyebrows, certainly. Let us know if you find something that weird! :-)

I DON'T REALLY UNDERSTAND IT, BUT HERE-

And when the light had mixed with the darkness, it caused the darkness to shine. And when the darkness had mixed with the light, it darkened the light and it became neither light nor dark, but it became dim.

"Now the archon who is weak has three names. The first name is Yaltabaoth, the second is Saklas, and the third is Samael. And he is impious in his arrogance which is in him. For he said, 'I am God and there is no other God beside me,' for he is ignorant of his strength, the place from which he had come.

"And the archons created seven powers for themselves, and the powers created for themselves six angels for each one until they became 365 angels. And these are the bodies belonging with the names: the first is Athoth, a he has a sheep's face; the second is Eloaiou, he has a donkey's face; the third is Astaphaios, he has a hyena's face; the fourth is Yao, he has a serpent's face with seven heads; the fifth is Sabaoth, he has a dragon's face; the sixth is Adonin, he had a monkey's face; the seventh is Sabbede, he has a shining fire-face. This is the sevenness of the week.

"But Yaltabaoth had a multitude of faces, more than all of them, so that he could put a face before all of them, according to his desire, when he is in the midst of seraphs. He shared his fire with them; therefore he became lord over them. Because of the power of the glory he possessed of his mother's light, he called himself God. And he did not obey the place from which he came. And he united the seven powers in his thought with the authorities which were with him. And when he spoke it happened.

THEN FURTHER DOWN IT SAYS THIS

"This is the number of the angels: together they are 365. They all worked on it until, limb for limb, the natural and the material body was completed by them. Now there are other ones in charge over the remaining passions whom I did not mention to you. But if you wish to know them, it is written in the book of Zoroaster. And all the angels and demons worked until they had constructed the natural body. And their product was completely inactive and motionless for a long time.

"And when the mother wanted to retrieve the power which she had given to the chief archon, she petitioned the Mother-Father of the All, who is most merciful. He sent, by means of the holy decree, the five lights down upon the place of the angels of the chief archon. They advised him that they should bring forth the power of the mother. And they said to Yaltabaoth, 'Blow into his face something of your spirit and his body will arise.' And he blew into his face the spirit which is the power of his mother; he did not know (this), for he exists in ignorance. And the power of the mother went out of Yaltabaoth into the natural body, which they had fashioned after the image of the one who exists from the beginning. The body moved and gained strength, and it was luminous.

"And in that moment the rest of the powers became jealous, because he had come into being through all of them and they had given their power to the man, and his intelligence was greater than that of those who had made him, and greater than that of the chief archon. And when they recognized that he was luminous, and that he could think better than they, and that he was free from wickedness, they took him and threw him into the lowest region of all matter.

I'D LIKE TO MEET SOMEBODY WHO REALLY KNOWS ABOUT THIS STUFF..
"Yaltabaoth" SEEMS TO ME TO BE THE DEVIL FOR THE MOST PART, WEIRD HUH.

Yaldabaoth - In the Ophite and Sethian systems, which have many affinities with that last mentioned, the making of the world is ascribed to a company of seven archons, whose names are given, but their chief, “Yaldabaoth” (also known as "Yaltabaoth" or "Ialdabaoth") comes into still greater prominence. - wiki

The "Gospel of Philip," (from the second half of the 3rd century, as far as anyone knows) which frequently mentions the relationship of Jesus with Mary Magdelene, his "companion," the evil powers are the "Archons." The Gnostics didn't believe God was the vengeful God of the Old Testament. And, the Chief Archon was the devil itself. They thought that those who believed in the God of the Old Testament were being deceived.

I dunno for sure, but who does? I got a LOT of reading to do still before I can really make any sense of this it.
I think the Apocrypha still make more sense to me than what I learned in sunday school.

"And when he saw the creation which surrounds him, and the multitude of the angels around him which had come forth from him, he said to them, 'I am a jealous God, and there is no other God beside me.' But by announcing this he indicated to the angels who attended him that there exists another God. For if there were no other one, of whom would he be jealous?"-The Apocryphon of John

They spin it in sunday school as "your not supposed to worship Idols" but why would god be jealous of a whatever you are worshiping? And yeah, I know, by thinking like this I am gona be labeled as a Heretic lol....

By the way, I think "Chief Archon" sounds a lot like "Grand Architect" from the Masonic stuff....

Freemasonry is a arose from shady origins in the late 16th century.

The Gospel of Philip was discovered in the 1940s at Nag Hammadi, Egypt. And, it dates to the 3rd century.

"Archon" is a Greek word that means "ruler" or "lord", more commonly used as the title of a specific public office.

Think of the sun and moon as two of the gods, along with the five visible planets and it makes perfect sense. People were grappling with the differences between the "gods". The sun was so important that there was a movement to ignore the other "gods", because worshiping them, for one, took more time and energy.

Pyrodin said...

Yeah, that's good way to look at it, the "Son of God" is actually the SUN of god, like the Zietgiest stuff. I dunno, seems a little simplistic but, people were just as irrational and mislead then as they are today, lol, Occam's Razor and all that.

Trace religious beliefs back to Babylon and you'll see for yourself that the celestial connection is real. I'm not saying angels were planets because it is a logical deduction or because it is the most simple explanation. The writings we have prove it with archaeological evidence. The sun/son similarity is not a coincidence, nor is the fact that sun-day is the one holy day remaining when the "jealous" (obscuring all others during daylight!) sun god wins out.

Pyrodin said...

I hear you, I've read a little about it, its just seems like there should be more to it but, you are right, simple things like the sun that everyday people then could identify with, lots of versions of the same events.
