UFO 'fired laser' over cemetery

National Archives entry of UFO seen in WidnesThe UFO [was] described as making a noise like "cats wailing"

A UFO was seen hovering over a Cheshire cemetery before firing laser beams, according to a police log released by the government.

The sighting was made by a young man on his way home after a night out in Widnes on 15 July 1996.

Police described the man as a "sensible sort of lad and genuine".

He is said to have seen a yellow light four storeys high, which made a high-pitched noise "like cats wailing" and fired beams at a railway line.

According to the police log the bright yellow light followed the youngster as he crossed a footbridge from Avondale Drive into Upton.

When he got home he told his father what happened and they both returned to the scene.

'Rather odd'

The pair found four railway sleepers smouldering and one with a 4in (10cm) hole burnt through it.

The official record shows a police officer was sent to the scene and he reported there was no sign of an accelerant being used.

The officer reported to his station: "One of the sleepers is still smouldering. It does look rather odd."

The local chief inspector was informed as well as the Aeronautical Information Service - which passes information to the air authorities to ensure the skies are safe.

The details are on the National Archives website, which has been released as part of a three-year project by the Ministry of Defence and the National Archives.

This freaked me out for a second, but for the Americans, "sleepers" are not people, they are railroad cars.  Still freaky, however.
