Ant Death Circles Explained

Here's another one with a human hand for perspective.

From a certain vantage point, you would see that we do this too, financially, for example... and in other ways. The blind are following the blind and all it takes is stopping... and having the courage and creativity to march into unknown territory.

Perhaps evolution allows for mass extinctions in all of us as a way to wipe the slate clean? If it can happen then it will happen eventually in the right conditions. The irony is if every living thing was a free thinker then nothing would get done...the conundrum of existence.

Who was the kid in the Harry Potter movie who said, "why is it always me?," after he was carried and hung up on a chandelier by English pixies?...

.. Whatever. But, the lemmings might be asking the same question.

Long ago, it was thought that lemmings fell out of the sky during stormy weather and then died suddenly. Their mass suicide is another Lemming myth perpetuated by the Disney Studios, Apple Computer and GMT games (despite their prestigious standing of these profit-conscious organizations within the scientific community). (-wiki, "Lemmings")

But, I do believe the death march of the army ants is a nice metaphor for human behavior in the last 50 years or more, seeing how Homo sapiens has proven to be, to some observers, at least, an evolutionary dead-end.

Sorry , have to disagree Ann ;-) I know your so surprised ;-) The Lemmings story is based on fact . It has been seen throughout history . When a animal or insect ( what ever ) reaches critical mass it will flee the situation .A sort of stampede mass hysteria . Once a species reaches critical mass the species realises ( as a whole ) that the population has gotten out of control . Not enough food to sustain the whole The species will flee to find food or get away from death from starvation and disease etc.. There have been cases where squirrels stampeded in mass to cross a river and drowned . This can happen with species that have quick reproduction like rabbits , rodents and some insects . But it takes a series of situations to come to a head . Such as lack of food ( starvation ) Booming population . The faster those issues arise the more likely the situation happens > mass migration moving towards doom , caused by environmental catastrophe ( a cliff ;-) or body of water etc ....Similar to a concert where someone yells FIRE ! Or a UN food relief where everyone pushes in to get food . And they get killed by falling on each other in the process ! As critical mass is reached space is decreased ! No where to go but down !

Not that these ants are doing that ! They will run in figure eights if you give them enough mushroom juice ! At least that's what I hear ;-) Maybe one found a black hole ! ;-O

Nice, Mirlen. I cited Wikipedia. Your source(s)are? You might want to "edit" Wikipedia's "Lemmings" article.
